Congratulations to Direk Oscar Yema & The Comfort Inmate, one of the few carefully chosen for Cinemalaya's Ricky Lee Film Scriptwriting Workshop 2021.
The Comfort Inmate
A family-centered advertising executive OFW in the Middle East and a good “provider of comfort” for his family loses his job and ends up behind bars due to the non-payment of bank loan – a criminal offense. To continue sending financial support back home, he resorts to being a “comfort inmate.” While in detention, he pursues what he does well: create advertising strategies and later develops an advocacy campaign for prisoners like himself.
Huling-Kumpas - 'The Last musical conduction'
A “shallow” retired singing superstar convinces her “intense” terminally-ill composer-husband to believe that a miracle will restore him to full health — through faith and change of character. The singer returns to the limelight after her husband’s last musical performance, an almost impossible feat for a cancer-stricken patient. The singer's comeback paves the way to leaving a legacy to her fans and her husband’s admirers.
The Fabulous News
An agoraphobic (extremely fearful of leaving one’s home) male news blogger comes out of his enclave and disobeys his homophobic father who soon disowns him. The blogger becomes a radio announcer of a news and public affairs program and eventually the first transgender newscaster of a major primetime TV news program.
The 50 yr-old College Dude
An American restaurateur and her undocumented Asian chef part ways when the latter’s wife dies, in the process not pushing through with the plan to marry so that the chef could obtain a green card. The chef returns to his home country to reunite with his children who are now degree-holders and with whom he had become estranged. He pursues a course in college and gets more than education.
